Rodents are the most common pest call we get across Ventura County, and almost every one starts the same way: “I think I heard something in the wall.” By the time most people notice, there’s usually more than one rat or mouse — they breed fast, and they’re good at staying out of sight.
The good news is that rodents leave clear signs once you know what to look for. Catching them early is the difference between a quick fix and a full infestation that damages your home.
The most common signs of rats or mice
Droppings. This is the clearest sign. Mouse droppings are small (about the size of a grain of rice) and dark; rat droppings are larger (closer to a raisin). You’ll usually find them along walls, in the garage, under sinks, in the pantry, or in the attic.
Scratching or scurrying sounds. Rodents are most active at night. If you hear scratching, scurrying, or gnawing in the walls, ceiling, or attic after dark, that’s a strong indicator.
Gnaw marks. Rats and mice have to chew constantly to keep their teeth filed down. Look for gnaw marks on food packaging, wood, baseboards, and — most dangerously — electrical wiring.
A musky smell. A persistent, musky odor (especially in enclosed spaces like cabinets or the attic) often means rodents are nesting nearby.
Nests and shredded material. Rodents build nests out of shredded paper, insulation, fabric, and cardboard. Finding one of these tucked in a quiet corner usually means they’ve settled in.
Grease marks. Rats follow the same routes over and over, and the oil in their fur leaves dark smudge marks along walls and entry points.
Why a rodent problem is worth taking seriously
Rodents aren’t just unsettling — they cause real damage and real health risks:
- Fire risk. Chewed electrical wiring is one of the leading hidden causes of house fires.
- Contamination. Rodents contaminate food and surfaces with droppings, urine, and the bacteria they carry.
- Structural damage. They chew through insulation, drywall, and ductwork, and they nest in places that are expensive to clean and repair.
- They multiply. A single pair of rodents can become dozens in a matter of months.
What actually solves a rodent problem
Here’s the part most homeowners get wrong: putting out a few snap traps or bait stations rarely solves it. You might catch a couple, but if you don’t address how they’re getting in, new rodents just keep coming.
A proper rodent job has three parts:
- Inspection — finding the entry points and the nesting areas. Rodents can squeeze through gaps as small as a coin.
- Removal — trapping and removing the active population.
- Exclusion — sealing the entry points so the problem doesn’t come back, plus ongoing monitoring for properties under steady pressure.
That last step is what separates a real fix from a temporary one — and it’s why we call it rodent control, not just rodent removal.
When to call
If you’re seeing droppings, hearing noises at night, or finding gnaw marks, it’s worth getting an inspection sooner rather than later. Rodents only get more expensive to deal with the longer they’re left alone.
